Our Newest Addition…

Happy Friday!

I thought since I’m just getting back into the swing of blogging again, today’s post will be light…but “sharp.”

Some of you may remember last summer, the post about mine and my oldest daughter’s brilliant idea to buy three hermit crabs when we vacationed at South Padre Island.

Wellllll…none of them made it to the new year. We tried. The accessories they required that amounted to well over a hundred dollars proves we tried.

But those things are high maintenance and apparently we weren’t doing something just right.

Sooooo…during January, when I was home and sick with the most ridiculous cold I’ve ever had, I started doing some thinking…about how we had an empty cage just sitting around not being used and how that perfectly fine cage should be getting some good use if it’s going to stay in my home.

Without wasting much time deciding what should occupy that space, I began doing some research on hedgehogs!! Man, Pinterest is not the place to look if you’re just in the beginning stages of entertaining an idea! It’ll leave you with a desperate yearning for whatever it is you may be searching over!!

Needless to say it didn’t take much convincing for myself or the rest of the family to decide this could very well be our next best mistake!!

After learning that the cage we already had would be too small we were too smitten over these little creatures to back out now!

We located six week old babies at a town about an hour from us, the kids evenly pitched in their money…$170 total and then Dad and I bought the newer, larger cage and necessary accessories.

My son named her Pixie.

She’s grown soooo much, probably double the size since we brought her home.

We have a lot of fun watching her explore and even her sassy attitude is quite entertaining. It takes her a bit to warm up when we take her out of her little home but she’s getting more used to us and is pretty motivated by her cat food pebbles! I’m convinced she’d do just about anything for her food.

It’s interesting how animals are so relatable to humans. Food, water, air, sleep, and then there’s also mannerism. The attitudes—humans have them and so do animals, especially hedgehogs!

When Pixie feels threatened those sharp quills standout in every direction; once she realizes we don’t want to harm her she relaxes but it takes some convincing.

And I get it.

I can be quite reluctant even in God’s care, and yet I know His intentions are for good but boy there are times I’m incredibly reserved in my trust.

Being Pixie’s caregiver, I KNOW, without a shadow of a doubt, I’m going to do everything I know is right and good to provide and nurture this prickly pet, but she isn’t always with me on that mindset.

When I compare this to my own relationship (with God as my caregiver) I think how silly I must seem to God when I hold tightly to that lack of trust.

Just like I want the best life for Pixie and I know I’m trustworthy to her, God knows and desires the same when it comes to He and I!

Check out Isaiah 26:3 with me, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” —Isaiah 26:3

I love the boldness and certainty in those words…no hesitation found there. No lack of trust. This is how I want my faith to align with our Lord and I pray you’d join me! No poking around, just smooth and comfortable trust in Him.❤️

Have a wonderfully blessed weekend friends!

About For His Purpose~ My name is Alicia and I'm a thirty-something year old who loves Jesus. Only through God’s amazing grace and mercy I have been redeemed from past regret and shame. Reading His word has allowed me to look past Satan’s forceful lies, to see myself for who Christ says I am in Him. Through writing I have learned why I made the choices I made in my younger years and I now have a better understanding of why I desire to love God like crazy these days. Despite my daily failures, God remains faithful always. I am reassured of His unconditional love for me by every ink-drop spilled out on paper, each committed prayer as I cry out to Him, and deep understanding reflected through reading His word as truth. Yes keeping a blog will make me vulnerable to others’ opinions- there will be some who don’t understand, some who may criticize or judge, but on the other hand if just one piece expressed through my writing grabs someone’s attention and directs them to God, then pouring out my heart in a blog for the world to read is worth it. I choose to glorify Him alone through words streaming across a glowing screen. And it wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t reveal the fact that I’m incredibly quirky; I’m my loving husband’s best friend, my vivacious kids’ craziest cheerleader and spiritual trainer (3 John 1:4). I love anything farmhouse and rustic style. I think cupping a warm coffee mug in the palm of my hands is more satisfying than the contents within. I share a common obsession with my husband for the mountains, but I would (without a doubt) settle for waves crashing against my legs at the Atlantic Ocean just as well, and I almost always have a Yorkie curled up on my lap while writing. *All photos are photographed by forhispurpose.blog and therefore may not be stored or photocopied in any manner.

  1. Congratulations! This post was so much fun to read!

Our heavenly father is our caregiver and He only wants the very best for us. He provides all our needs!

We love South Padre Island, too! Our vacation is already planned for this summer (late July). From hermit crabs to shark sightings, I’m so amazed at what God has created for us to enjoy!

God does indeed bless us with so many things to enjoy…I just need to remember I don’t need to own every animal He puts in my path!!😅
South Padre Island would definitely be a place I’d visit again!! …Keep clear of those stores that sell the hermit crabs though!!!😬🤪

  3. Oh my goodness! Pixie is so cute! 🥰 I am curious to know what your doggies think of her and she them? I am guessing you don’t let them congregate, but I bet they have eyed one another… Thank you so much for this amazing post! I have had some ridiculous fears and anxiety crop up lately. And just today I was thinking how I am not trusting God. Then you send this post! Perfect timing! God is so good! Thank you, my friend! ♥️

    1. Hey!! Pixie gets nervous of the dogs and will tuck-in with her little quills going every which way…and Max, our little Yorkie is really the only one who is curious about her. To the point he’ll stand at her wire cage and paw at it. I try and keep him back though because I’m thinking those prickles might not feel too good if

  4. Pixie is so cute. God loves and wants the best for us but we struggle with that trust sometimes. But I guess just like pixie and you it takes a relationship- time and just being with you will make pixie grow in her trust if you, the same with regards to our relationship with God. May we grow in our trust in Him 🙏🏽

  5. Alicia, Pixie is the cutiest little thing EVER!!! 🥰🤗 Makes me wish I had one for just a minute. I guess I will have to stick to the 2 dogs and cat for now. Love how you related your relationship with her to that with our Jesus.

  6. I love the name Pixie! Wonderful choice for that adorable critter! Yes, we can certainly be like an animal in the care of its human when it comes to trust. Great reminder that we are in the best hands ever. If I were an animal I wouldn’t trust a human either…. 😂🤣😂🤣 But God… we should be able to trust the one who created us. Who knows and cares for us better. Wonderful reminder Ali. Your post was a satisfying and nourishing read.

  7. You’re back to blogging, Alicia–and so glad you are! What a cute addition you’ve brought into your family! Pixie is one blessed little critter to be in your care. Look how you’ve provided for her needs, and even for her entertainment. And God does the same! In fact, the good things he has for us are so abundant, he has to store them up (Psalm 31:19)–“good things” like gifts and blessings–just like the treats, toys, and tunnels you’ve provided for Pixie!
