First Jesus, then coffee…one more cup: part 2

When I wrote my last blog-post (First Jesus, then coffee) I didn’t know I’d have a part two until I was just finishing up.

It prompted me to consider a recent conversation my husband and I had…
‘The way we’re living day to day—the things we’re saying and doing, our behavior and actions are all a representation of our Christian faith.’

When we’re asked to give our testimony, we want it to be an accurate reflection of who we are in Christ and ultimately who Jesus is. As His followers we need to portray Him well, not only outside of our home but inside also.

For the two of us, while growing up, our view of God was misrepresented therefore we lived a life apart from Him—and I wouldn’t blame our parents for that; more than likely they had misconstrued ideas or a void of Christ as well during their years at home and prior to that it’d been an ongoing defect passed down generation after generation.

As a result our testimonies contain heartache and regret (from a lack of Christian wisdom and direction).

Somehow, someway, somewhere amongst the genealogy lines of mine and my husband’s families, way back when, the instructions written in Psalm 78 were disregarded. God’s word was neglected and ceased passing down to descendants, thus leaving many of our ancestors at the risk of eternity spent without the hope of Heaven and Jesus.

But now (by God’s mercy and grace, and having clasped onto His truth) my husband and I have a proper view of real faith and hope and what it looks like points to Jesus—apart from Him there is no hope.

Hebrews 145:4 says let each generation tell it’s children of your mighty acts, let them proclaim your power… As Christians we are held accountable and we’re challenged to encourage one another along (Hebrews 10:25)…even passing the history of God’s word to the next generation.

What that means is that my children need to know mine and my husband’s testimonies and they need to witness us setting a Godly example. It’s not enough to just read a good devotion and wait for the next one to come, it’s not enough to quote a worn-out rehearsed bedtime prayer, it’s not enough to attend a church service when it’s convenient…

You see, at some point (in their lives) each of my children will give their testimony and as their parents, my husband and I refuse to be held responsible for any unfaithfulness to God. I’m not insinuating that they won’t endure trouble along the way (John 16:33) or that as a family we’ll always get it right…

BUT when asked to share their “faith story” and how God has worked in their life, I want both of my girls and my boy to look back on their years and confidently speak the truth of Jesus’ love because of what they experienced in our home. I don’t want them to grow old and finally receive Jesus, wandering why they missed Him growing up. I don’t want to fail at exposing them to the fulness of life with God: routine church attendance, passionate prayers, crazy addicted love for Jesus, the desire to read His word faithfully—I’m talking about real genuine Christian faith.

I want my children to be thankful that as their parents we’ve acted out Deuteronomy 6:5-9, sharing with them to love God above all else. I want them to feel blessed knowing their testimony unveils their life devoted to Christ and that it has the possibility to change lives, for His glory.

The truth is, we all have a testimony and our lives day-to-day display and speak what our story will include. So grab your Bible and one more cup of creamer, I mean coffee!! and quench your thirst with scripture that points to Jesus, fill your life with Him. And be ready to share with someone—with your children, their children and so on, so that generations to come may know and love Him as Lord and Savior, no regrets!

And it wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t reveal the fact that I’m incredibly quirky; I’m my loving husband’s best friend, my vivacious kids’ craziest cheerleader and spiritual trainer (3 John 1:4). I love anything farmhouse and rustic style. I think cupping a warm coffee mug in the palm of my hands is more satisfying than the contents within.
